BILL McCAULEY

After retiring in 2015 from a 40-year teaching career, I returned to painting, my first love. My passion is landscapes, especially those that showcase the ethereal light found only on the Cape, and I work in both pastels and oils. Primarily self-taught, along with some valuable workshops and group support, I’m a member of ArtSmartCapeCod, the Maryland Pastel Society, the Cape Cod Art Center, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and the American Impressionist Society. My non-art education includes a B.A. in German, an M.A. in English, and an M.A. in Gifted and Talented Education, all of which led to a rewarding teaching career and full fluency in German.
As a representational landscape painter who embraces the impressionists’ emphasis on color, light, and temperature, I’ve learned to see color in even the darkest shadows. My greatest epiphany has been that when I paint a tree, it’s not really the tree that I’m painting, but rather the effects of light on the masses that make up the tree. This neatly summarizes my approach to painting because, in the end, it’s always about the light.
I am honored to be able to share this light with you.
